About this program
When the President declares a major disaster, FEMA's Individual Assistance program provides direct grants to survivors for housing repair, temporary housing, and other disaster-related needs. This is not a loan — it's free money that doesn't need to be repaid. Many survivors don't apply because they assume they won't qualify or don't know it exists.
Who qualifies?
US citizens, non-citizen nationals, or qualified aliens who live in a presidentially declared disaster area and suffered disaster-related losses. Renters and homeowners both qualify.
What you get
Grants for home repair, rental assistance while displaced, and other serious disaster-related needs. Up to $43,900 for housing assistance and other needs. Separate from SBA disaster loans.
